Can you mount a TV over a fireplace in Florida?

How hot the wall above a firebox actually gets, what that does to a panel over a couple of seasons, and how to test your own before deciding.

It is the most requested spot in the house. It is also the one we turn down most often, and it is worth understanding why before you buy a bracket.

What the heat does

Manufacturers rate panels for an ambient temperature of roughly 100°F. The wall above a working firebox can sit well past that during an evening, and a gas insert with a poorly placed vent can do it faster than a wood-burner.

Nothing dramatic happens. The screen does not shut off, and there is no smell of burning. What happens is slow: capacitors age faster, backlight uniformity drifts, dead pixels turn up. Two seasons later the picture is worse and nobody connects it to the fireplace, because the fireplace was never the obvious suspect.

The Florida wrinkle

Half our fireplaces barely get used. In a house where the fire runs three evenings a winter, the heat argument is weak — and we will say so rather than talk you out of a spot that suits your room.

The other half are gas inserts that run for atmosphere on any cool evening, which is more hours than people estimate when asked. Decorative electric fireplaces are a non-issue: no meaningful heat, mount away.

So the honest answer is not yes or no. It is: measure yours.

Testing it yourself

Run the fire the way you normally would for an hour. Then hold the back of your hand flat against the wall where the middle of the screen would sit.

If it is warm but you can hold it there indefinitely, you are fine. If you want to take your hand away within a few seconds, that wall is not for a television. An infrared thermometer costs about twenty dollars and turns this into a number, which is what we bring.

A mantel that projects out several inches helps a lot — it throws the heat forward and away from the wall above. A flush chimney breast gives the heat nowhere to go but up the face.

The second problem nobody mentions

Even where the heat is fine, the height usually is not. A mantel sits at 48 to 54 inches, so the screen starts higher than eye level before anything is fixed. That is a permanent 20-degree neck tilt for anyone on the sofa.

A tilting bracket recovers part of the angle. A pull-down mount fixes it properly — the screen drops to eye level when you watch and parks above the mantel when you do not. It costs more and it is the only honest solution in a room where the sofa is close.
