It is the most requested spot in the house and the one we turn down most often. Two things decide whether it works: how hot the wall gets above the firebox, and how far back your seating is. Both are answerable before anything is drilled.
Electronics above a working firebox cook slowly. Nothing fails on day one — it fails a year later, and by then nobody connects it to the fireplace. We measure the wall temperature above the mantel with the fire running before committing to the spot.
A mantel that projects out throws heat forward and away from the wall, which helps. A flush chimney breast does the opposite. Gas inserts usually run cooler than a wood-burner, but where the vent sits matters more than the fuel does.
Above a mantel the screen usually ends up higher than it should be. A tilting mount buys back part of that angle. Where the seating is close, the honest answer is a pull-down mount that brings the screen to eye level — that is a different bracket, not an adjustment.
On drywall above the mantel concealment works, but the run is longer and access around the breast is tight, which is why it costs more than a normal in-wall job. On a stone or brick chimney nothing gets fished through and a painted raceway is what you get.

Called at nine, screen was on the wall by two. He found the studs off-centre from where I assumed they were and moved the mount over four inches rather than bolting into drywall. Cable went inside the wall, no trunking.
