Every wall-mountable television has four threaded holes in the back, arranged in a rectangle. VESA is the standard that says how far apart they are. Get that number right and almost any bracket fits; get it wrong and nothing does.
Reading the number
VESA sizes are written as width by height in millimetres: 200×200, 400×400, 600×400. Measure centre to centre between the holes, horizontally and vertically. That is the whole measurement.
Rough guide by screen size:
- Up to 32 inches — usually 100×100 or 200×200
- 32 to 55 inches — usually 200×200 or 400×400
- 55 to 75 inches — usually 400×400 or 600×400
- 75 inches and up — 600×400 or 800×400
Treat it as a guide, not a fact. Manufacturers vary within the same size class, and a 65-inch panel from two brands can differ.
Where to find it without measuring
The manual lists it. So does the spec sheet on the manufacturer’s site, under “wall mount” or “VESA”. If the TV is still boxed, it is usually printed on the carton.
The number that actually breaks installs
Weight, not pattern.
Brackets are rated for a maximum load, and the rating assumes correct fixings into solid framing. A 75-inch panel runs 60 to 90 pounds; a full-motion arm at full extension multiplies the effective pull well beyond the panel’s static weight. A bracket rated to exactly your screen weight with no margin is a bracket chosen badly.

Three things that catch people out
Curved and very thin panels. Some need spacers so the arms clear the curve or the port cluster. They usually ship with the TV — losing that small bag of parts is the most common reason an install stalls.
Recessed hole wells. On thin panels the threaded holes sit in a well. The screws that came with the bracket may be too short to reach thread. Length matters as much as diameter.
The Frame and its relatives. Samsung’s Frame ships with its own slim plate designed to sit flush; a generic bracket defeats the point entirely, because the whole idea is that the panel sits tight against the wall. Flush-mount TVs are their own job.
If you are buying a bracket today
Check the pattern, then check the weight rating, then check what your wall is made of — because the wall decides the fixings, and the fixings are what actually hold the screen. In Florida that last question matters more than most places: half the houses here are block behind the plaster.
